Ghost overlay, grid lines or align it afterwards?
The short answer
Grid lines divide the frame but know nothing about your previous photo, so they reduce drift without preventing it. Alignment apps see the previous photo but only after the new one exists, so they can only crop or warp what you already shot. A ghost overlay is the only method where the previous photo is visible while you are still able to move, which is the only moment the problem can actually be solved.
There are exactly three moments at which a repeat photo can be made to match the last one: before you shoot, while you shoot, and after you shoot. Each has a tool, and they are not equally capable.
Grid lines: a ruler with no memory
Turning on the camera grid gives you two vertical and two horizontal lines. You can put a shoulder on one, or the edge of a doorway, and come back to roughly the same place next week.
This genuinely helps. Compared with framing by pure instinct, thirds lines cut the obvious errors: a subject drifting to one side of frame, a horizon sliding up and down.
But the grid has one defining limitation: it is the same grid in every photograph. It has never seen your last shot. It cannot tell you that you are standing thirty centimetres closer than in week one, or that the camera is four centimetres lower because you used a different shelf, or that you have accumulated ten degrees of rotation across two months.
Those are precisely the errors that ruin a comparison, because they are too small to notice in any single session and they compound. A grid catches gross errors and is blind to slow drift, which is the kind that actually happens.
Aligning afterwards: solving it at the only moment you cannot
The post-processing approach is intuitive: take whatever photos you took, then load both into something that rotates, scales and warps them until they overlap.
It works, in the narrow sense that the output images line up. It costs two things.
Cropping throws away real pixels. Making two differently framed photos share a frame means discarding the edges of both. On a full body shot the edges are the outline, which is often exactly what you were comparing.
Warping invents pixels. Any rotation or perspective correction resamples the image. Every pixel in the result is interpolated from neighbours in the original. For most photography that is invisible and harmless. For a record of a body, a healing wound, a treatment or a structural build, it means the thing under examination has been partly synthesised by an algorithm.
And under both of those sits the hard limit: no software can recover an angle you did not shoot from. If the second photo is three-quarter on and the first is front on, there is no correction that produces the front-on photo you did not take. It can only be faked.
Post-hoc alignment is a rescue tool for sets that already exist. It is a bad plan for a set you are about to create.
Ghost overlay: the previous photo, while you can still move
A ghost overlay draws the last photo, semi-transparent, on top of the live camera preview. You move until the faded image and the live one agree, then shoot.
What makes this different in kind rather than degree is the timing. The information arrives while you still have the ability to act on it. Standing too close is not a defect discovered afterwards, it is a mismatch you can see, so you step back.
It also compares against the right reference. Not an abstract grid, and not an idealised template, but the specific photograph the new one is going to sit next to.
Three practical consequences:
Drift cannot accumulate. Every shot is matched against the previous one, so the error never compounds past a single session.
The saved file is untouched. The overlay is a viewfinder aid. It is never composited into the photo, so what gets stored is exactly what the sensor recorded.
It works on subjects a grid cannot help with. A plant has no straight edges to place on a grid line, but it has a specific silhouette that a ghost of last week’s photo matches perfectly.

When grid lines are genuinely enough
Not every project needs an overlay.
If you are photographing something with strong architectural edges, from a doorway you can find blindfolded, once a month, for three months, grid lines and some care will get you there. Twelve frames, big obvious changes between them, low stakes if one is slightly off.
The overlay earns its place when any of these are true: the subject changes slowly enough that small errors compete with real change, you are shooting dozens of frames so drift has room to compound, the subject has no strong straight edges, or you intend to make a time-lapse where a single misframed shot is visible as a jolt.
That is most body, face, skin, hair and plant projects, and every renovation someone intends to show a client.
The honest limitation of all three
None of them controls the light. A ghost overlay will happily let you take a perfectly aligned photo under a ceiling lamp when the previous eleven were taken facing a window, and the resulting frame will look wrong in a way that has nothing to do with framing.
Alignment is one variable of four. The other three are still yours to fix.
